About the Award

Javier F. Magrina, MD, is an exceptional leader and mentor who has touched the lives of innumerable students, residents, fellows, and gynecological surgeons worldwide through his trainings, lectures, videos, observership programs, mentorship, advising and coaching. Known as a “master surgeon,” Dr. Magrina’s pioneer robotic techniques and technical innovations have benefited many patients and contributed to the advancement of robotics in Gynecology. In addition, he has empowered progress in robotics through publication of over 50 papers exclusively related to robotic surgery in peer reviewed journals, publication of 17 book chapters on robotic surgical techniques and a textbook on Robotic Gynecologic Surgery, and authorship of 46 robotic surgical videos.

The Excellence in Robotic Surgery Award, established in 2022 in honor of Dr. Magrina, recognizes an outstanding surgeon for their innovations in robotic assisted technology. This award is supported by a grant from Intuitive Surgical.

Award Eligibility

Requirements:

  • The nominee must be recognized as an outstanding surgeon for their significant contributions in robotic assisted gynecological surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System.
  • Must be a member of the AAGL.
  • Must be a Practicing Physician.
  • If selected, the winner must attend the AAGL’s Global Congress, November 5-8, 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, to accept the award in person.
  • Board Members from an AAGL or FAAGL Board are not eligible for nomination during their active status on the board.

In addition, the award committee is particularly interested in a candidate who has accomplished some or all of the following: 

  • Has demonstrated the use of robotic surgical technology during the prior 12 months as documented with publications and presentations at national and international meetings.
  • Has contributed to the advancement of robotics with new techniques or new applications.
  • Has published significant research in robotics.
  • Has organized teaching/mentorship programs in robotics.
  • Is an influential mentor in robotic surgery for ten or more years.

Required Documents for Nominations

All nominations must include the following documents:

  • Completion of the award application outlining how the nominee has significantly contributed to robotic surgery utilizing the da Vinci Surgical System.
  • A current curriculum vitae (CV) of the nominee.

Award Notification

The Foundation of the AAGL Board will notify the award recipient, nominees and nominators.

Award Winnings:

The winner of this prestigious award will receive:

  • Recognition on the Foundation website.
  • Recognition in Foundation promotional materials.
  • Recognition in the Global Congress Final Program.
  • Recognition on stage and presentation of a commemorative statue at the AAGL’s 52nd Global Congress in Nashville, Tennesse.
